Learn the Art of Transforming Negative Thoughts with Mindfulness
Breaking the habit of negative thinking with mindfulness involves being aware of your thoughts and emotions in the present moment without judgment. Here are some steps to help you learn how to get started on this practice:
1.Become the police of your thoughts, acknowledge your negative thoughts: The first step in breaking the habit of negative thinking is to recognize when these thoughts arise. Pay attention to your thoughts and notice when they are being critical or pessimistic.
2. Practice mindfulness meditation: Mindfulness meditation can help you develop a greater awareness of negative thoughts and emotions. Set aside time each day to practice meditation, focusing on your breath and observe your thoughts without getting caught up in them. Let them come, let them go, and if anything be amused by them and how eventually you will find YOU are NOT THEM.
3. Challenge negative thoughts: Once they have become aware of your negative thoughts, now it’s time to challenge them. Ask yourself questions about the thought, “does it benefit you”, “does this thought make you feel good or bad” , “is there anything you can do about correction the situation/feeling”. Really interrogate that bad thought and consider alternative perspectives or the facts/answers to those questions that nullify your negative beliefs.
4. Cultivate self-compassion: Negative thinking often stems from a lack of self-compassion. BE KIND TO YOURSELF. YOU MUST BE THE #1 KINDEST PERSON TO YOU!!
